How do I use the baby name finder?

Filter by gender, first letter, origin or style, then tap a name to see its meaning, origin, similar names and sibling pairings. Shortlist favourites as you go and compare them together. Rankings come from the Office for National Statistics release for England and Wales; style tags are editorial browsing aids, not official categories.

How do you choose a baby name?

  • Say it with your surname. Check how the first and last names run together and what the initials spell.
  • Think about nicknames. Consider the short forms other people are likely to use, not only the full name.
  • Check spelling and pronunciation. A less common spelling may need explaining for years.
  • Look at popularity. A top-10 name may mean more than one child with the same name in a class. Our baby name trends guide explains how rankings move.
  • Try it out loud. Use it for a few days before you decide.

When do you have to register a baby's name?

In England and Wales, you must register a birth within 42 days. In Scotland it is 21 days. You choose the name at registration; it can be changed later, but that involves paperwork. Our guide to changing a child's name by deed poll explains the process and who needs to agree.

Baby Name Finder: common questions

Where do the baby name rankings come from?

The ranks shown on name pages come from the Office for National Statistics release of baby names registered in England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland publish their own lists.

How long do you have to name a baby in the UK?

You name your baby when you register the birth. In England and Wales that must be within 42 days of the birth; in Scotland it is within 21 days.

Can you change a baby’s name after registering it?

Yes, but it takes paperwork. A child’s name is usually changed by deed poll, and everyone with parental responsibility normally needs to agree.
