Baby registries are designed to sell you things you do not need. The Lullaby Trust, NHS and NCT agree on the essentials: a safe sleep space with a firm mattress, a car seat for the hospital trip home, nappies and vests, and a way to feed your baby. Everything else is optional until you discover your own preferences.
The genuine essentials
- Sleep. Cot or Moses basket with a firm, correctly sized mattress (BS EN 16890), two fitted sheets, and 2.5-tog sleeping bags (BS 8510). No pillows, bumpers, nests or loose blankets.
- Travel home. An R129-approved infant car seat — the hospital will not discharge you without one. Belt-fitted or ISOFIX base depending on your car.
- Nappies and changes. Newborn nappies (not too many — babies grow fast), water wipes, a changing mat and nappy sacks.
- Clothing. Six to eight vests, six sleepsuits, muslins, a hat and scratch mitts. Babies grow out of newborn size in weeks — do not overbuy.
- Feeding. If breastfeeding: nursing bras and breast pads. If bottle feeding: four bottles, a steriliser and formula is your choice after NHS guidance.
What you can skip for now
Wipe warmers, nappy bins with special refills, elaborate bath sets, and cot mobiles are nice-to-haves. Buy them later if you actually want them — they are not registry essentials.

How many newborn nappies should I buy?
