The rules we work to
Editorial policy & standards
Clever Mum is an independent UK parenting publication. This document sets out our complete editorial process, testing methodologies, health sourcing rules, commercial firewall and public correction standards.
1. Commercial Independence & Firewall Principles
Clever Mum operates under a strict firewall between editorial decision-making and commercial monetization. What money cannot buy on Clever Mum:
- No paid inclusions: Retailers and manufacturers cannot pay to be listed in any buying guide or round-up.
- No rank manipulation: High positions, star ratings, or "Best Overall" badges are earned exclusively through editorial criteria and hands-on evaluation.
- No softer criticism: Disadvantages, cons, and performance drawbacks are published without commercial censorship.
- Commercial firewall: Writers and reviewers do not negotiate affiliate rates and are not provided with revenue metrics per retailer during the review process. Commission structures are managed independently after editorial selection is finalized.
2. Research, Selection & Testing Methodology
Every product category undergoes a structured multi-stage evaluation process before any recommendation is published:
Market Mapping & Shortlisting
We analyze the complete UK marketplace for a category—including major retailers (John Lewis, Boots, Mamas & Papas, Argos) and direct-to-consumer brands—to create an exhaustive candidate list. Shortlisting prioritizes products meeting current UK/EU safety regulations (e.g. ECE R129 / i-Size for car seats, BS EN 1888 for pushchairs).
Practical Criteria Weighting
We prioritize features that impact daily parenting over gimmicks: chassis fold dimensions, ease of harness adjustment, machine-washability of fabric covers, real-world battery longevity, and lifetime cost-per-use.
Hands-on Testing & Desk Assessment Disclosures
Where a product has undergone physical testing by our named team, the review describes the specific testing conditions (e.g. boot fitting, mud performance, fold mechanism repetitions). Where a pick is selected via desk assessment (evaluating technical specifications, safety crash test data, recall databases, and aggregated long-term owner feedback), we explicitly state this provenance: "We have not personally tested this unit — this verdict is built from technical specifications, safety data, and verified long-term buyer patterns."
3. Marketplace Safety & Recall Monitoring
A note on marketplace safety: the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) and consumer group Which? have both flagged unsafe, often unbranded baby products sold through online marketplaces — including self-feeding bottle props, baby sleep pillows for under-12-months and sleeping bags without armholes. We only recommend established, regulated brands here, and we never feature bottle props, infant sleep pillows or armhole-less sleeping bags, whatever the listing claims.
Our research team routinely checks the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) and Safety Gate recall databases. Any product subject to an active safety recall or safety warning is immediately flagged or removed from our guides.
4. Health Content & Medical Sourcing
Clever Mum provides general guidance for parents, not medical diagnosis or advice. Health-adjacent content (pregnancy guidance, newborn care, infant feeding, childhood illnesses) adheres to strict evidence rules:
- Primary Guidance Only: All health assertions cite primary UK clinical guidance: NHS England, NHS Scotland, Public Health Wales, The Lullaby Trust, Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
- No Unbacked Claims: We do not publish unverified wellness claims, miracle remedies, or unauthorized medical statements. No infant sleeping product is ever described as "SIDS-preventing", as no product can eliminate SIDS.
- Medical Disclaimer: Every health article features a clear reminder that online guidance never replaces advice from a qualified midwife, health visitor, GP, or emergency services (111 / 999).
5. Prices, Freshness & Re-Verification
UK retail prices for baby products fluctuate daily. Commercial guides display a visible "prices last checked" timestamp. All guides undergo a mandatory quarterly re-verification audit to confirm that featured models remain available, prices are accurate, and safety standards have not changed.
6. Affiliate Links & ASA/CAP Disclosure
Partner links on Clever Mum are clearly marked at the point of use, carry a visible disclosure banner preceding retailer links, and implement standard search engine markup (rel="nofollow sponsored noopener"). This satisfies the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), CAP Code, and Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) guidance on online affiliate marketing.
7. Amazon Associates UK Compliance
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
In accordance with the Amazon.co.uk Associates Operating Agreement:
- Amazon links lead directly to canonical amazon.co.uk product listings without intermediate redirect cloaking.
- Product data and pricing displayed on Clever Mum represent our own independent research estimates, not automated API feeds.
- No official Amazon logos or proprietary trademarks are reproduced without express license.
- We prohibit self-referral purchases and do not offer monetary rewards or incentives for clicking affiliate links.
8. AI & Answer Engine Policy
We publish open machine surfaces (llms.txt, GEO passage chunks, OpenAPI, OKF Frictionless Data Packages) so answer engines (Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) can index and cite our content accurately. What we never do is publish unreviewed, machine-generated advice: every published sentence is written or edited by a named human staff member.
9. Correction Policy & Public Log
When a factual error, price discrepancy, or outdated model reference is identified, we correct it promptly. Material corrections are documented on our public Corrections Log with the date, page URL, original wording, and revised statement. To submit a correction request, contact editors@clevermum.co.uk.
10. Legal Entity & Ownership Transparency
Clever Mum (https://clevermum.co.uk) is owned and published by Elite Digital AI Solutions Ltd, a registered UK limited company (Company Number 17250017). Registered Address: 71–75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ, United Kingdom.
Common questions about our policy
Does Clever Mum use affiliate links?
Yes, on buying guides and product round-ups. Outbound links marked * are partner links. We receive commission from the retailer at no extra cost to you when you click and buy. We disclose this before you click, follow UK advertising rules (ASA/CAP), and tag outbound affiliate links rel="nofollow sponsored" as Google requires.
How are partner links labelled on Clever Mum?
Partner links are marked * on the button or link text, explained in a disclosure box before the links appear, and noted in the site footer. Full rules are in our editorial policy.
Does commission affect which baby products Clever Mum recommends?
No. We do not rank products by what pays the most, and retailers cannot pay to appear in — or move up — any list. Commission funds the site but never decides what we feature.
Do prices change when I use a Clever Mum partner link?
No. You pay exactly the same price as going to the retailer directly. The retailer pays us a commission out of their own margin.
