Stair gates are the single most important baby-proofing purchase in a multi-level home — and the most commonly misinstalled. The rule that catches people out: never use a pressure-fit gate at the top of stairs. If a child leans or falls into it, the gate can dislodge. Top-of-stairs gates must be screw-fixed to the wall or banister.

What safety standard should a stair gate meet?

- Multi-level homes with open-plan layouts. You may need three or more gates — kitchen, stair top, stair bottom — so budget accordingly.
- Renters. Pressure-fit gates for doorways avoid drilling; use screw-fit only where safety demands it (stair top) and patch holes when you leave.

- Single-level flat or bungalow. Doorway gates between kitchen and living room may still help, but stair gates are irrelevant.
- Your child is already climbing confidently. Transition to teaching safe stair use instead of relying on a barrier they can defeat.
- You never leave the child unsupervised near stairs. Gates are not a substitute for supervision — if you are always within arm's reach, a gate adds less value.
