The mattress is the most safety-critical item in the cot. The Lullaby Trust is clear: it must be firm, flat, and fit the cot with no gaps at the edges — a hand should not slide between mattress and cot side. Soft, memory-foam or pillow-top cot mattresses are not safer-sleep compliant, whatever the marketing says.
What UK mattress standard should you check?
- BS EN 16890 is the current European safety standard for cot mattresses — look for it on the label.
- BS 1877-10 covers domestic mattress flammability and includes firmness requirements for cot mattresses. A compliant mattress resists indenting when your baby is placed on it.
- Exact fit. Standard UK cot mattresses are 120 × 60cm; cot beds use 140 × 70cm. Always measure your cot internal dimensions before buying — "standard" is not universal.
- Waterproof cover. A removable, washable waterproof cover protects the core from nappy leaks and night sweats. Check whether it is included or sold separately.
Does a breathable mattress prevent SIDS?
