A white-noise machine is an optional sound device, not an essential sleep purchase or a treatment for sleep problems. Compare a clearly adjustable volume control, a timer, accessible off switch and a setup that keeps the device and cords away from the cot.
The American Academy of Pediatrics warns that some infant sleep machines can produce hazardous noise levels. Its advice is to place one as far from the baby’s head as possible and use it for a short time. Duration matters as well as loudness.
