How do these picks compare at a glance?

Steriliser or bottle-prep machine: what is the difference?

A steriliser treats feeding equipment after cleaning. A bottle-preparation machine helps prepare a feed. Buying one does not automatically remove the need for the other process. Before ordering, map out where bottles will be washed, sterilised, assembled and stored.

The NHS advises sterilising feeding equipment until at least 12 months and says a dishwasher cleans bottles but does not sterilise them. It lists cold-water solution, steam and boiling as methods; follow the relevant instructions for the method and equipment you use.

SystemOwnership costs and space to compare
Cold-water containerReplacement solution, enough capacity and a safe worktop location
Microwave steriliserInternal microwave dimensions and compatible bottles
Electric steam steriliserCounter space, descaling and drying arrangements
Bottle-prep machineCleaning schedule, replacement filters and whether preparation meets current NHS guidance

Check the entire workflow, not just an advertised cycle time. A large capacity is useful only if your bottles and pump parts actually fit. Consult current NHS formula preparation guidance before using any preparation method.

How did we choose these products?

These are research-based shortlists. We compare the published specifications, intended use, limitations and likely additional costs. We have not performed physical or laboratory tests, and the selection does not cover every product on the UK market. Retailers cannot pay to appear, and commission never affects rankings. Product shopping links go to Amazon UK. Confirm the exact variant, current price, seller and availability on Amazon before buying.

What UK safety standard should you check?

UK standard: BS EN 14350 (drinking equipment) · BS EN 14988 (highchairs). Drinking equipment standards cover chemical migration and mechanical safety of bottles and teats; the highchair standard covers stability, restraint and entrapment.

  • Bottles and teats cite BS EN 14350; highchairs cite BS EN 14988
  • Highchairs have a crotch post or 5-point harness — never rely on a tray alone
  • Never use bottle-prop or self-feeding devices — flagged by OPSS as a choking risk

What questions come up most?

How long do I need to sterilise baby bottles?

The NHS recommends sterilising all feeding equipment until your baby is at least 12 months old, alongside washing in hot soapy water (or a dishwasher) first — sterilising is not a substitute for cleaning.

Are formula prep machines safe?

Do not assume a machine meets the NHS temperature guidance from its marketing. Check that water is at least 70°C when mixed with formula powder, using a digital food thermometer. If it is cooler, stop using it and follow the NHS kettle method. Follow all cleaning, filter and formula instructions.

Is cold water sterilising as good as steam?

Cold-water and steam sterilising can both be used when the relevant instructions are followed. Check the required solution strength, contact time and replacement interval for the exact product. Clean feeding equipment first; sterilising does not replace washing.
