A bouncer gives you a safe place to put your baby down while you eat, shower or recover from a contact nap — but it is not a sleep space. The Lullaby Trust and NHS are clear: babies should sleep on a firm, flat surface; bouncers and swings are for supervised awake time only.
Safe use — non-negotiable
- Never on a raised surface. A bouncing baby can move the frame off a table, sofa or bed. Floor only, always.
- Never for unsupervised sleep. The inclined position is not safe for prolonged sleep — transfer to a cot or Moses basket for naps and nights.
- Stop when sitting unaided. Once your baby can sit without support (typically around six months), the bouncer angle becomes a fall risk.
- Harness every time. Three-point or five-point harness, done up before you step away — even for a "quick" shower.
