Quick answer — How much sleep does a toddler need?

Toddlers need roughly 11–14 hours of sleep a day including naps. Sleep commonly wobbles around 18 months and 2 years thanks to development, separation anxiety and testing boundaries. A consistent wind-down routine, firm but kind boundaries, the right nap timing, and a dark, calm room fix most issues. Move to a bed when they climb out or are ready, usually 2–3½.

Skip this if your child is still a newborn — use the first-12-weeks sleep guide. Skip medical sleep issues already under a paediatric plan.

Toddler sleep is rarely a straight line. Just as you crack it, a regression, a new bed or a burst of independence knocks it sideways. The good news: the fundamentals that fix toddler sleep are boringly consistent.

## How much sleep do toddlers need?

The rough guide (including naps):

* **1–2 years:** about 11–14 hours in 24, usually one nap
* **3–4 years:** about 10–13 hours, with the nap often dropping between 2½ and 4

Watch your child, not the clock — the right amount is what leaves them waking happy and lasting the day without falling apart.

## Why does toddler sleep fall apart?

Common culprits, often overlapping:

* **The 18-month and 2-year "regressions":** surges in development, language and independence disrupt settling
* **Separation anxiety:** a normal, healthy phase that makes bedtime harder
* **Boundary testing:** bedtime is prime territory for finding the edges
* **Nap timing:** too long, too late — or dropped too soon — sabotages nights
* **Big transitions:** a new bed, potty training, a sibling, starting nursery

## Which foundations fix most toddler sleep problems?

* **A short, consistent bedtime routine:** bath, teeth, two books, bed — the same order every night signals sleep is coming
* **A consistent bedtime and wake time**, including weekends
* **A dark, cool, calm room** — a dim night light is fine if they prefer
* **Wind down screens** at least an hour before bed
* **Get the nap right:** cap an over-long nap and don't let it creep too late in the afternoon
* **Plenty of daylight and active play** in the day

## How do you handle bedtime battles and curtain calls?

For the toddler who won't stay in bed or makes endless requests:

* **Front-load needs:** drink, toilet, one more cuddle *before* lights out, so there's nothing left to negotiate
* **Be calm, boring and consistent** when they get up — walk them back with minimal chat and fuss. Excitement (good or bad) rewards the getting-up
* **A "gradual retreat"** — sitting by the bed and slowly moving further out over nights — helps anxious settlers without leaving them distressed
* **Reward systems** (a sticker for staying in bed) can work from around 2½–3

## When should you move from cot to bed?

There's no fixed age — most children move between 2 and 3½. Move sooner if they're climbing out (a safety issue) or potty training and needing the loo; wait a little if a new sibling is arriving, to avoid stacking changes. Make the room safe: secure furniture to the wall, use a bed guard, and consider a stair gate on the door or landing.

## What should you do about early waking?

The classic 5am start. Check the room isn't getting light (blackout blinds help), the nap isn't too long, and bedtime isn't too early. A toddler "gro-clock" style light that changes colour at get-up time works well from around 2½.

## When should you get advice about toddler sleep?

Most toddler sleep issues respond to consistency and time. Talk to your health visitor or GP if your child snores loudly or seems to stop breathing/gasp in sleep (worth checking), is persistently exhausted despite good routines, or if sleep problems are seriously affecting the family's wellbeing — support is available and you don't have to just cope.

## What questions come up most?

How much sleep does a toddler need?
Toddlers aged 1–2 need roughly 11–14 hours in 24 including naps, usually with one daytime nap. From 3–4 years it’s about 10–13 hours, with the nap often dropping between 2½ and 4. Judge by whether your child wakes happy and copes with the day rather than the exact hours.

When should I move my toddler from a cot to a bed?
There’s no set age — most children move between 2 and 3½. Move sooner if they’re climbing out of the cot (a safety risk) or need the toilet at night during potty training. Delay slightly if a new baby is due, to avoid too many changes at once. Make the room safe with secured furniture and a bed guard.

Why has my toddler suddenly started waking at night?
Common causes are the 18-month and 2-year developmental regressions, separation anxiety, boundary testing, nap timing being off, or big changes like a new bed, nursery or sibling. A consistent routine, firm but kind boundaries and correcting nap timing usually settle it within a couple of weeks.

How do I stop my toddler getting out of bed?
Meet needs (drink, toilet, cuddle) before lights out, then calmly and boringly walk them back each time with minimal talk — excitement rewards getting up. A gradual-retreat approach helps anxious settlers, and a sticker reward for staying in bed can work from about 2½–3.
