Quick answer — How much do newborns sleep?

Newborns sleep 14–17 hours per day but only in 2–4 hour stretches, day and night — that’s biology, not a problem to fix. Follow safer-sleep basics: baby on their back, in a clear cot or Moses basket, in your room for the first 6 months, with no pillows, duvets or cot bumpers.

Who should skip this

Skip this if your baby is older than about 12 weeks and you want sleep training — use the sleep regressions guide instead. Skip it if you have a medical sleep plan from a neonatal or specialist team. This page is for well babies in the first 12 weeks at home.

The first 12 weeks are a survival window, not a sleep-training window. Newborns sleep 14–17 hours a day in 2–4 hour stretches because they have tiny stomachs and no circadian rhythm yet. Follow safer-sleep rules from day one: back to sleep, clear cot, same room as you for six months. Anyone selling a guaranteed newborn schedule is selling you a product, not biology.

## Who should skip this newborn sleep guide?

Skip this if your baby is older than about 12 weeks and you are looking for sleep training — use our [sleep regressions and methods guide](/baby/sleep-regressions-and-sleep-training-methods-compared/) instead. Skip it if you have been told your baby has a medical sleep issue (reflux that needs treatment, a nasogastric tube, or a neonatal unit discharge plan): follow that plan, not a generic first-weeks article. This page is for well, term or near-term babies at home.

## What are the safer-sleep rules you cannot skip?

Back to sleep, every sleep; a clear, flat, firm cot or Moses basket; in your room for the first six months; nothing in the sleep space except a fitted sheet; room about 16–20°C; never sleep with a baby on a sofa or armchair. Those rules come from The Lullaby Trust and the NHS, checked 12 August 2026.

* **Back to sleep, every sleep** — naps and nights. Rolling onto the tummy later is a different stage; newborns are placed on their back.
* **Clear, flat, firm sleep space** — no pillows, duvets, cot bumpers, wedges, nests or soft toys.
* **Same room as you for the first 6 months**, for every sleep, including daytime naps where you can.
* **Feet to foot** if you use a light blanket, or a well-fitted sleeping bag of the right tog. See our [sleeping bag buying guide](/best/best-baby-sleeping-bags-uk/) for tog and fit.
* **Keep the room 16–20°C** where you can, and never let baby overheat. Check the chest or back of the neck, not the hands.
* **Never sleep with baby on a sofa or armchair** — the single highest-risk scenario in UK safer-sleep data.
* If you might bed-share (planned or 3am-accidental), read the Lullaby Trust co-sleeping checklist *in advance*, not at 3am. Never bed-share after alcohol, smoking, or on a sofa.

No consumer monitor prevents SIDS. If a product's marketing hints that it does, that is a red flag, not a feature. Treat a monitor as reassurance; treat the list above as the actual protection.

## What does normal newborn sleep look like week by week?

Weeks 0–2 are almost random across 24 hours. Weeks 2–6 are the hardest for most families (cluster feeding and a late-afternoon witching hour). Weeks 6–12 often bring one longer night stretch of 4–6 hours — and plenty of babies still do not do that. Both patterns are normal.

The NHS page on helping your baby to sleep is the source for the 14–17 hour total and the "no schedule in the early weeks" stance ([NHS — helping your baby to sleep](https://www.nhs.uk/baby/caring-for-a-newborn/helping-your-baby-to-sleep/), checked 12 August 2026). The Lullaby Trust is the source for the safer-sleep list ([Lullaby Trust — safer sleep](https://www.lullabytrust.org.uk/safer-sleep-advice/), checked 12 August 2026).

## What genuinely helps in the first 12 weeks?

Light is the lever: bright daylight (a morning walk counts) and dim, boring nights teach day from night faster than any paid routine. A simple wind-down — feed, fresh nappy, sleeping bag, dark room — done in the same order builds a cue long before a baby "follows a schedule". If there are two of you, take the first stretch in shifts: one covers 8pm–1am, the other 1am–6am. Four unbroken hours changes everything.

Put baby down drowsy-but-awake *occasionally*, without pressure. If it works, brilliant. If not, feeding or rocking to sleep is not a bad habit at this age. Newborns are not being "trained into bad habits"; they are being kept alive and close.

A Moses basket or bedside crib in your room is enough. You do not need a sleep consultant, a £300 "smart" bassinet, or a wake-window spreadsheet for a three-week-old.

## What should you ignore?

Anyone selling a guaranteed newborn sleep schedule, wake-window charts for a 3-week-old, or advice to delay night feeds. Newborns need night feeds — for many, well beyond 12 weeks. "Sleep when the baby sleeps" is useless if you also have a toddler, a job, or a partner on nights. Asking for one protected 4-hour block from a partner, friend or grandparent is the version that actually works.

White noise is optional. Swaddling is optional and has a stop date: stop as soon as baby shows signs of rolling. Weighted swaddles and sleep bags are not recommended by UK safer-sleep bodies.

## When should you talk to someone about newborn sleep?

Speak to your health visitor or GP if baby is unusually hard to wake, struggling to feed, or you are worried about breathing pauses. Speak to someone about *you* if sleep deprivation is tipping into hopelessness, panic, or thoughts that scare you — that is a health issue, not a parenting failure. Your midwife, GP or [PANDAS Foundation](https://pandasfoundation.org.uk/) can point you to perinatal mental health support.

If you want one next action after reading this: set the room up to the safer-sleep list tonight, then pack the [hospital bag](/pregnancy/hospital-bag-checklist-uk/) if you are still pregnant, or read [weaning](/baby/weaning-guide-when-and-how-to-start/) only when you actually need it — not at week two.

## What questions come up most?

    How much do newborns sleep?
Around 14–17 hours in every 24, but rarely more than 2–4 hours at a stretch because they need to feed frequently. Sleep spread evenly across day and night is normal for the first weeks.

When do babies sleep through the night?
Many babies start giving one longer 4–6 hour stretch somewhere between 6 and 12 weeks, but genuine "sleeping through" often comes much later, and night feeds remain normal well into the first year. Every baby differs.

Is it safe for my newborn to sleep in my bed?
The safest place is a clear cot or Moses basket in your room. If you might bed-share, the Lullaby Trust advises preparing the bed to reduce risk — and never bed-share after alcohol or smoking, or on a sofa, where the risk is highest.

What should a newborn wear to sleep?
Typically a vest and sleepsuit plus a correctly-sized baby sleeping bag of a tog suited to the room temperature. No hats indoors for sleep, no loose blankets near the face, and check the back of baby’s neck for overheating.
