# Baby

Newborn sleep, feeding, weaning and development — practical first-year advice that tells you what actually matters, what it costs in the UK, and which gear earns its place.

Quick answer — How much do newborns sleep?

Postnatal depression affects more than 1 in 10 parents in the first year, and is different from the "baby blues" (which peak around day 3-5 and pass within two weeks) by lasting longer and feeling heavier — persistent low mood, loss of interest, guilt, or feeling disconnected from your baby. It is common, not a personal failing, and responds well to treatment: talk to your health visitor, midwife or GP as the first step.
