Not always. A July 2026 Which? investigation found 150 potentially lethal baby products — sleeping bags without armholes, self-feeding bottle props and infant sleep pillows — for sale across Amazon, eBay, AliExpress and other marketplaces, almost all from third-party sellers rather than established brands. Buying from a named, regulated brand rather than an anonymous marketplace listing is the single biggest safety lever you control.

   
## What the investigation found

Which? and the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) identified 150 products across Alibaba, AliExpress, Amazon, eBay, Etsy, OnBuy, TikTok Shop and Wish that breach UK product safety law: 59 sleeping bags with missing or inadequate armholes, 54 self-feeding bottle devices, and 37 infant sleep pillows marketed for babies under 12 months. All three categories carry documented suffocation or choking risks.

## Why marketplace listings are riskier

Amazon, eBay and similar sites host both first-party retail and third-party marketplace sellers on the same page, often with no obvious visual distinction. A listing that looks identical to a trusted brand's product can be an unbranded import with no UK safety testing behind it — and no one accountable if it fails.

## How to shop safely

* Check the seller name on the listing, not just the product photos — "Sold by [established brand]" is different from "Sold by [random seller code]"
* Look for the actual UK safety standard cited (BS 8510 for sleeping bags, BS EN 14350 for bottles) rather than marketing words like "premium"
